Entre Madrid, Tánger y Guelaya; aventuras, venturas y desventuras. España y el Marruecos precolonial (1893-1913)

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we explore the various historical perspectives on Spain’s policies towards the Moroccan empire during the period from 1893 to 1913. This includes an analysis of the campaigns of Sidi Gueriech, the establishment of the Protectorate and the occupation of Tetouan. The geographical proximity of the Moroccan empire meant that Spain was fully invested in determining its future. Whether to alter or maintain Morocco’s status quo became the focal point of Spanish foreign policy. The Spanish government understood that the colonial distribution of Morocco was already a reality and that inaction on the part of Spanish diplomacy would mean missing out on an excellent opportunity for expansion. There was a fear of potential frustrations which could lead to discontent among the political forces and Spanish public opinion, particularly when the wounds from the loss of Spain’s previous colonies still remained unhealed. All of this made it necessary for Spain to devote its full strength to making its future presence in Morocco a patriotic issue. To achieve this, the Spanish Government meticulously designed a policy of attraction towards the neighboring empire. The plan was to persuade Moroccan society in order to forge bonds of sympathy and submission, thereby avoiding any potential acts of local resistance.
